Board Postpones Levy

Citing fiscal responsibility and good stewardship of the public trust, the Board delayed by one year going back to taxpayers for additional money.

“The District is able to forego an operating levy this year and break our three-year levy cycle because of the administration’s management and sound decision-making practices these past few years, “ said Board president Dr. Robert M. Arkin. “We certainly appreciate everyone’s efforts not only to control expenses through a variety of ways but also to generate revenue though alternative methods,” Arkin continued.

Board member Marjory Pizzuti also praised the District’s work while at the same time emphasizing that students’ education and experiences have not suffered. “We have cut back on certain operational expenses, but in no way have our students been short-changed on a quality Upper Arlington education. We have many indicators to demonstrate that our students continue to perform, exceed, and excel academically, artistically and athletically.”

The District will end this year with a projected fund balance and not be in deficit spending until fiscal year 2011. In general, savings were realized by renegotiating vendor contracts, reducing printing costs, using a variety of electronic communication, using district staff rather than outsourcing for certain maintenance and operational tasks, reallocating district resources, and joining area consortia to leverage purchasing ability. Alternative funding came from partnerships with school PTOs, booster organizations, and the Upper Arlington Education Foundation; federal and state grants; cell tower fees; and advertising at athletic venues.
