Windermere Weekly Update from Mrs. Nolan:

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end."

Scott Adams

Happy Friday. It's been a busy, full week at Windermere.

One of our building goals is to ensure we know each and every child at Windermere and to make sure each child has multiple adult connections, in addition to his/her classroom teacher. We have spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks, as a staff, talking about our students and their individual needs in all areas. We firmly believe reaching every child and making connections with each child is essential in maximizing his/her learning daily.

I wish each of you a great weekend with your family and friends. After the tragedies over the past few weeks, it is a great reminder to all of us, to appreciate each day.

With hopes that each of you have time to breathe and enjoy doing what you love,

Julie

Veterans honored November Board of Education Meeting

At the the November 14, 2017, Upper Arlington Board of Education meeting, each building will recognize a Veteran. This is a special honor for our students. If your child(ren) have a parent or grandparent who would like to represent Windermere, please email me. (jmnolan@uaschools.org)   These special guests will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and enjoy a small recognition. Thank you for considering!

Family STAR Reports:

The district fall benchmarking window has come to a close, please remember that you can access your student’s score via the Parent STAR Access website. If you had an account last school year, your account will still be active this year. If you do not have an account, you can request access. The process to request access can be found in the How Parents Request Access to Renaissance Place document. You can go to this webpage for reference documents, sample score reports, and FAQs around STAR Assessments.

Halloween Parade and Parties Take Place on Friday, October 27:

Please see the attached document for important information about our annual Halloween parade and parties at Windermere.

Fall Conferences:

Fall conference time is upon us.  You should have received an email from your child's teacher regarding signing up for a time to talk about your child's progress thus far.  This is a reminder that as our elementary schools have shifted towards trimesters, progress reports will come out after conferences are held.  Your child's teacher will use this conference opportunity to share strengths and areas of growth as well as current assessment information and work progress/samples from the classroom.

Windermere PTO Update:

Box Tops Collection – Our Fall Box Tops collection is this week!  Please return your zip-lock bag filled with Box Tops by October 13th.  Be sure to write their name and a total # on there.  There will be prizes for the top student in each class,  and the top classroom will win a free trip to Hawaii.  (Kidding, they actually win a class party.)   Thanks to Jenny Longstreth and Sarah Henderson for coordinating our collection.  A fiscal gold star goes to Sarah for re-using last year’s Hawk Walk envelopes.

Chipotle Night –Tuesday, October 10th is Windermere Night at the Kingsdale Chipotle.  Show them your and we’ll earn a portion of the sale.  We all need a little “Vitamin C”.

Family Read-Together -   The Windermere Library is excited to partner with your fourth grade team and our PTO to introduce a new and exciting learning opportunity; the first annual Windermere Family Read-Together!

Chosen with the advice of our teachers, this year’s book is Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo. Participating families will be asked to read this book together, at home, from October 13th – November 15th. This award winning and classic story will appeal to readers of all ages.  In school, your child will be given a chance to answer book-related trivia questions that will be read during morning announcements for weekly raffle prizes! Your child will be bringing home a form to register for this family event tonight in backpacks. (Form is also attached.) Book sales start next week! Let's read together!

Fall Family Night –  Thanks to our Fall Family Committee: Monica Moyer, Lauren Greene, Carrie Carducci, Megan Rule, Paula Young, Holly Monnier, Tosin Olugbile & Kimberly Moberg for a wonderful event!  Congratulations to our scarecrow winners:  1st place- the Hemmelgarn family with Captain Underpants, 2nd place – Mr. Hudson  for ET & Elliott, and 3rd place to the Young family for their BB8.  An honorable mention goes to the Owens family for their Gru scarecrow.

Another thanks to the families who shared their chili with us.  Congratulations to our contest winners: 1st place – 5th grader Joey Shepherd, 2nd place – The Meyer family and 3rd place – the McGeorge family.  Rumor has it that Joey got some of his buddies to stuff the ballot box…but I give him extra credit for good strategy.

Thank you,

Andra Gillum (andrag@wowway.com)

PTO President

Lastly, a message from Monica Moyer and the FFN committee…

The scarecrows so delightful

The chili so tasty

Could the straw maze confuse you, if being so hasty?

The pumpkins were there for all to enjoy

Or was your preference to throw a football?

Surely not, to annoy

Fireside s'mores and thoughts of what the fall can bring

The amazing band, rhythmically there to sing

For your pleasure, for everyone's pleasure

The Windermere Fall Fest, yours to treasure!

We want to thank so many who worked so hard to make this event a success: the custodial crew who never wavered in being helpful and positive - Liz, Skippy and Kathy! The volunteers who supported each area of the event - we absolutely could not do it without you. Thank you to the spouses of the committee members - especially John Greene and Chad Heitmeyer - sometimes we need muscles! To the teachers, Miss Maria and Mrs. Nolan - the support you give is so positive and wonderful - we appreciate it so much!  And to all those who participated in and/or attended the event - thank you for making the Windermere Community wealthy in friendship, support and appreciation for each other!!
