Windermere Weekly Parent Update 12.1.17

Happy Friday, Windermere Families!  I hope you had the very best Thanksgiving holiday.  This was such a busy and full week at Windermere.

Last night’s, Because of Winn Dixie, family movie was so well attended.  I hope you and your family enjoyed this first family BIG read.  We know how lucky we are to have Mrs. Hemmelgarn as our amazing librarian.  Her passion for books is contagious.  A special thank you to Mrs. Hemmelgarn, her family, Mr. and Mrs. D, our fourth grade teachers and, most importantly our AWESOME fourth graders for their planning and hard work!  The night was a lot of fun.  We look forward to another family read in our near future.

Today, our fourth graders had their Livingston first grader pen-pals come to Windermere.  Our fifth graders traveled to Livingston Elementary School to work with their pre k and kindergarten buddies.  In a previous update, I shared with you about this partnership.  Today was an unbelievable experience for our students and the Livingston students.  We had SO much fun learning together.  I had the opportunity to talk to the principal at Livingston to debrief, and she too shared, her staff, families and students are excited to continue this partnership this year.  We will update you on our activities and partnership with Livingston!

Tonight is the annual Upper Arlington Winter Festival in Old Arlington.  I hope you will consider joining the many Windermere families for this fun event.  Our very own Windermere fourth graders will be performing this evening at 7:30 p.m.  It’s a fun and magical evening.

Have a great weekend!  I hope to see many of you this evening.

Julie

Kiva's Got Talent!  Windermere's annual talent show fundraiser is coming up on February 23rd at 6:30pm! This year, we are helping immigrant and refugee families through CRIS Ohio. If students are interested in performing in the talent show, they can get a permission form from your classroom teacher or Mrs. Das. Practices will be in January. Thanks so much!

Windermere Parties/Adoptions:  The past two years, Windermere students have added a service learning component to our Winter parties.  We will be once again creating a "Wish Room" for each grade level to make a difference in our community.

There are seniors who need help this holiday season to brighten their day and put a smile on their face.  Operation Adopt a Senior is a great way for us to assist seniors and offers a unique opportunity to come together as a community to help our elders.  Your kind donation makes it possible for seniors in our community to receive a special holiday wish.  More importantly, your gift will let these seniors know that someone cares.

Help at Home is a program of LifeCare Alliance that serves approximately 650 seniors in Franklin and Madison Counties.  Most of the seniors live below the Federal Poverty Guidelines and sometimes they struggle between purchasing food, medications and other household items.  The thought of buying a gift for themselves wouldn't cross their minds.

Two years ago, Windermere 2nd and 4th graders were able to provide gifts for 220 seniors.  Last year, Windermere 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders were able to provide 300 gifts.  This year, we have enlisted the help of Tremont Elementary, and we are on a mission to reach all 650 clients!

This is how it works...  Parents will receive a Sign-up Genius soon where they will be asked to sign up for typical party supplies.  There will also be a place where you may sign up to bring in specific items for each grade level.  The items may include a towel set, blanket, mug, body lotion/soap, cleaning supplies, socks, or a gift card to a grocery store or restaurant as those items are the ones most requested by the seniors.

On the day of the Winter parties, one classroom per grade will be transformed into the "Wish Room" where students will wrap one of the donated presents for a senior, make a card for them, and include any other extra items we can get find.  We have included toothbrushes and toothpaste donated from a local dentist and candy in the past.

Vans will pick the gifts up at the end of the day and take them to LifeCare Alliance to be delivered by volunteers.  You will also have the opportunity to sign up on Sign up Genius to deliver some of the gifts!  Seniors will be grouped together by location to make delivering easy for your family.  Deliveries will be made Dec. 22nd or Dec. 23rd from LifeCare Alliance, 1699 Mound St.

Thank you all in advance your help and support of this project.  Windermere ROCKS!!
