Student Well-Being Surveys

Supporting the development of the skills and characteristics identified in the Profile of an Engaged Learner affirms Upper Arlington Schools’ commitment to the whole child. In order for students to fully engage in that complex learning and social activities that are the backbone of the school experience, their basic physiological and psychological needs must be met. When students are healthy, feel safe, have strong supportive relationships, are challenged and experience success, and are engaged in learning that is relevant and meaningful, they are more likely to enjoy learning, develop positive social skills and achieve greater academic success (Ohio's Whole Child Framework).

The Engaged Learner survey provides crucial insight at the district, building and student levels to help the school counselors, teachers and administrators understand how to best support students so that they are able to thrive in school. Overall, student responses provide vital information on the direction and goal-setting for each school building and the district. The administrators, school counselors and teachers on each building’s leadership team review the results to identify needed prevention and intervention resources for their students. As areas of improvement are identified, each building carries out action plans to improve the experience of students.   

Upper Arlington Schools utilizes the Panorama platform to administer the Engaged Learner Competency and Well-Being Survey. Questions are both internally developed and selected from the platform. The survey topics are all aligned to the district’s Profile of an Engaged Learner. 

The survey is administered to students online at all grade levels.

• Grades K-2: Students are supported individually by teachers and school staff members as they take a brief online survey using emoji images for their responses. The 9-question survey covers the following focus areas: supportive relationships, social awareness, emotion regulation, self-management, sense of belonging and perseverance. • Grades 3-5 and 6-12: Students independently take a longer online survey, with age-appropriate questions based on grade band about these focus areas: supportive relationships, social awareness, emotion regulation, self-management, sense of belonging, perseverance and hope. Students have the opportunity to take the Engaged Learner survey in both the fall and the spring, which provides the district with an important comparison point in the data. 

In the winter, students in grades K-12 will have an opportunity to take an additional survey that focuses on the topics of safety, school climate, teacher-student relationships, and cultural awareness and action (grades 6-12 only).
