Sparking Moments That Matter: Wickliffe Bird Data Center

What happens when math takes flight? At Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School, students are discovering the answer firsthand. Their bird data collection center turns classroom lessons into a hands-on project where numbers, nature and curiosity soar together. Maintained throughout the year, the center keeps lessons connected to the real world, sparking questions, observations and conversations.

The project began last year as an end-of-year challenge for Shelly Hughes and Andrew Williams’ math classes: take all the skills learned throughout the year and apply them to a real-world problem. With a grant from the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, students sketched designs, measured fences, calculated budgets, and built trellises, planted gardens, and installed bird feeders.

“This was just one big word problem in real life,” said Livie C.

Beyond the calculations, students gained hands-on experience with tools, teamwork and responsibility. “It makes me feel grown up using that stuff,” said Margaux R.

Once built, the center became an ongoing classroom resource. Students track birds, tend the plants and turn observations into graphs and data analyses, linking math and science lessons to tangible results. “We write down what we see, and then we ask questions about it,” Margaux explained. “It brings a lot of curiosity into the classroom.”

Looking ahead, the center will continue to inspire new generations of students, offering opportunities for data collection, problem-solving and scientific inquiry — while reminding the original builders that their work has a lasting impact. “It will always make me come to Wickliffe and say, ‘Oh hey, I built that,’ ” Margaux said.

By giving students a chance to apply learning in meaningful, hands-on ways, projects like the bird data collection center create moments that foster curiosity, confidence and a love for discovery.

Sparking Moments That Matter: How This Project Supports Our Strategic Plan

Creating authentic academic experiences, rooted in the characteristics of the Profile of an Engaged Learner, is one of the primary focuses of the Excellence & Innovation 2030 Strategic Plan for Upper Arlington Schools. This project reflects four skills/characteristics in the Profile of an Engaged Learner:

  • Solution Seekers: We engage curiously with each other and the world by asking meaningful questions, synthesizing knowledge, thinking critically and considering diverse perspectives to generate actionable ideas.
  • Creative: We take purposeful risks to build connections that allow us to innovate beyond what currently exists.
  • Skilled Communicators: We clearly, thoughtfully and ethically give language to our ideas, listen with the intent to understand, and connect respectfully with others.
  • Responsible and Resilient: We own our actions. We take pride in our work, accept challenges, and persevere through setbacks.
