Strength in Team Staff Spotlight: Dana Schoenleb, UA High School

In this biweekly staff spotlight, we will be highlighting the people who contribute to the strength of our team by making our schools and our district such a special place for students.
Dana Schoenleb, Engineering Technology Teacher, Upper Arlington High School
How do you contribute to your school/department and the school district as a whole? I have a great interest in developing and promoting STEM and Engineering in the district, as well as providing opportunities for students to put into practice what they learn in mine and other classes. We have worked hard to grow the program and to add value by credentialing students on engineering software and lab skills and working to get students college credit for completing Engineering courses.
What inspires you / motivates you in your role? I genuinely love working with kids. Getting to spend time with them, following the growth they make from first-year students, then seeing them move to the next stage of their life is something that motivates me to do what I do. I always enjoy hearing from former students to get updates on their post high school endeavors.
What is a memorable moment, or your proudest moment, in the 31 years you have been with UA Schools? I consider last year as my best year as an educator — it seemed the stars all aligned, and my classes just went so smoothly. Seeing my Engineering students present their years of challenging work to a panel of STEM professionals, work that I helped guide, and seeing the success they have is a truly proud moment.
What brings you joy outside of work? Spending time with family and friends, getting calls from my grown children. Watching the Buckeyes, going to the lake and almost anything outdoors. And not to be overlooked — spending time with the world's best dog, Corky.
Reflections from UAHS Principal Andrew Theado on Dana: Dana Schoenleb has built a career as an advocate for students, making a positive impact through his work. He operates with a quiet dedication, consistently preferring to put the focus on students rather than drawing attention to himself.
Dana was an early champion of career exploration and credentialing programs, integrating these vital skills into his curriculum long before they became common practice. He accepts all students into his classes and programs, recognizing the potential in every individual. By prioritizing the relationships, Dana creates an environment of support.
While he may avoid the spotlight, Dana Schoenleb's exceptional and impactful work with students makes this recognition truly deserved.
