Strength in Team Staff Spotlight: David Brooks, Intervention Specialist at Barrington Elementary School
This year, we will be highlighting the people who contribute to the strength of our team by making our schools and our district such a special place for students.
David Brooks, Intervention Specialist at Barrington Elementary School
How do you contribute to your school/department and the school district as a whole? I work with a population of students that need some extra time, support, practice, and care. None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of the paraprofessionals at Barrington. Mary W., Sarah P., McKenna B., Sara R,. Emily S., Sharin M., Missy G., Kirsten H., Emma L., Jamie S., Maryan W., Mia C., Gabby H., and Elizabeth S. all deserve this spotlight as well. Together, we strive to teach these students the basic skills needed to lead independent lives, while fostering meaningful friendships with their peers through inclusion.
We recently teamed up with the 4th grade progressive classes for their Buckeyes for a Purpose service learning project where we made and sold products to raise funds and awareness for students with disabilities. The funds will be used to purchase adaptive sports equipment like a bike.
What inspires you / motivates you in your role? I am happiest at school when I am spending time with the students. They are all so unique, and each has qualities that make me smile daily. Having the opportunity to spend so much time with the students lets me see them develop over a span of several years. Seeing things that we have been working on together get done independently and the enthusiasm they show when they “get it” is an incredible feeling.
What is a memorable moment, or your proudest moment at UA Schools in the 13 years you have been with Upper Arlington Schools? It may seem small, but one of my proudest moments while in Upper Arlington was watching one of my students walk across the 5th grade promotion stage all by themselves. When the student joined my class in kindergarten, there were a lot of challenges that needed to be overcome. Through years of hard work, the student was able to display their progress by ending their 5th grade year the most independent they have been.
What brings you joy outside of work? Outside of school, I love to explore my creative side by playing the banjo in the band Bourbon Legend and making unique things through woodworking. I also enjoy traveling. I have visited 36 countries and will drive around the USA with my wife in our campervan, Ruby, that I built.
What Barrington Principal Nichole Cooper has to say about David: David is truly an incredible asset to our school community. He is a team player who always puts students first, advocating tirelessly for their needs and ensuring every child feels valued and supported. David’s caring and kind demeanor fosters a sense of trust and belonging, not only with his students but also among his colleagues. He is always willing to jump in and help wherever needed, never hesitating to go above and beyond to support others. His passion for teaching shines through in everything he does, and the positive impact he has on his students and our school is immeasurable. We are beyond grateful to have someone as dedicated, compassionate and inspiring as David on our team.
