Strength in Team Staff Spotlight: Joshua Bower, Barrington Elementary School

In this biweekly staff spotlight, we will be highlighting the people who contribute to the strength of our team by making our schools and our district such a special place for students.
Joshua Bower, School Nurse, Barrington Elementary School
How do you contribute to your school/department and the school district as a whole? As a school nurse, I contribute by promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of our school community, recognizing that academic success is built on the foundation of good health. As nurses, we are trained to focus on health education, disease prevention and early intervention, creating a safe and supportive environment that enables students to thrive both physically and academically. This would not be possible without the superior collaboration among teachers, counselors, administration and the community. My mission is to identify and address any health barriers to learning that a student may have and provide a path so that each individual has the opportunity to reach their full academic potential, while maintaining a safe learning environment for all in our schools.
What inspires you / motivates you in your role? I find it really inspiring to mentor and guide students in taking charge of their health and well-being. Seeing them become more confident and self-sufficient in handling their health needs drives me every day. I'm proud to work alongside families to celebrate the achievements of the students and to offer ongoing support throughout their education, helping them develop habits that not only promote wellness but also lead to success well after they leave the classroom.
What is a memorable moment, or your proudest moment, in the 8 years you have been with UA Schools? I am most proud to share with new parents to the district that our clinics are staffed with 100% registered nurses every day. While here at school, their students will have access to nursing care.
What brings you joy outside of work? My loving wife and our two amazing children. It is truly an honor to be there for them and to watch our children grow.
Reflections from Barrington Elementary School Principal Nichole Cooper on Joshua: Barrington Elementary is incredibly lucky to have Joshua Bower as our school nurse. Every day, Joshua brings not just skill and professionalism, but genuine kindness, warmth and heart to our school community. He is a calming presence for students who are anxious or hurt, offering comfort, reassurance and a friendly smile that can turn a tough moment into a safe, supported one.
As our lead nurse, Joshua goes above and beyond. He guides our staff with medical training, carefully managing each child’s medical plans and making sure our entire school is safe and cared for. But what truly sets him apart is his ability to connect with students on a personal level. He builds trust, shows compassion and makes everyone feel valued, seen and supported.
We are so grateful for Joshua and honored to have him as part of the Barrington family.
