Strength in Team Staff Spotlight: Melissa Thien, Jones Middle School

In this biweekly staff spotlight, we will be highlighting the people who contribute to the strength of our team by making our schools and our district such a special place for students. 

Melissa Thien, Building Secretary, Jones Middle School

How do you contribute to your school/department and the school district as a whole? As Building Secretary, I wear a lot of hats! I support our administration, teachers, students and parents in all kinds of ways. I run the main office, so I am often the first person people see or talk to when they come in, and I try to set a positive tone for the school with a friendly and helpful attitude. I also take care of tasks like ordering supplies, managing school communications and the calendar, and overseeing building-level finances, including handling revenue collection, purchase orders, and activity accounts budgets.

What inspires you / motivates you in your role? What inspires me most is being the “hub” of the school and helping things run smoothly behind the scenes. I like being a familiar face to the students and staff, whether it is offering a calming word to a student or handling details that allow teachers and administrators to focus on what they do best. There are so many small parts of the job that add up to something really meaningful. 

What is a memorable moment, or your proudest moment, in the 23 years you have been with UA Schools? I have been with UA Schools for a while - six years as the Attendance Secretary at the high school, 7.5 years as Building Secretary at Hastings, and now 7 years at Jones - so there are a lot of memories. Some of my favorites include: tracking down fake phone calls and notes at the high school, dressing up as the Wicked Witch for Halloween at Hastings, and being recognized as “Clerical Staff of the Year” at Jones. One thing that was consistent in every building where I served was working with top-notch administrators and building staff. I have thoroughly enjoyed each place.

What brings you joy outside of work? Definitely my family. My husband, Ken, and I have three children (who all went through Jones and UAHS) and our four young grandchildren, ages 1.5 to 6 years old. I love spending time with them whenever I can. I enjoy getting together with friends and family and taking care of our beautiful siamese cat, Pretty Cat. My husband and I love to drive to our hometown, Dayton, for pizza and other local things we can only find there. 

Reflections from Jones Principal Jasa George on Melissa: Melissa is truly the backbone of Jones Middle School. Whether it's supporting staff, assisting students or welcoming families, she ensures that everyone has what they need to thrive. Much of what Melissa does happens quietly behind the scenes, but the impact is felt school-wide. Her dedication keeps Jones running smoothly day in and day out.

Beyond her hard work, Melissa brings kindness and warmth to every interaction. She’s the friendly face that greets parents, students and staff alike, making everyone feel seen and supported. We are deeply grateful for all that Melissa does to make Jones Middle School a better place.
