Strength in Team Staff Spotlight: Susan Laux, Burbank Early Childhood

In this biweekly staff spotlight, we will be highlighting the people who contribute to the strength of our team by making our schools and our district such a special place for students.

Susan Laux, teacher, Burbank Early Childhood School

How do you contribute to your school/department and the school district as a whole? My contribution to BECS has always been promoting the school/family connection. I believe that learning does not occur in a vacuum but grows when families have an active role in the experience. These relationships have been some of the most wonderful experiences of my career, and I am truly grateful that many of these relationships continue even after they leave my classroom.

The UA district has also enriched my classroom with their willingness to visit and be an active participant with the children. Some of my fondest memories are of mystery readers, Halloween trick-or-treaters and artists preparing for our annual Gallery Hop. Thank you for your continued support.

What inspires you / motivates you in your role? When I am in the community and former students shout out the classroom motto to get my attention: “ Once a Turtle, always a Turtle.” That is truly inspirational.

What is a memorable moment, or your proudest moment, in the 39 years you have been with UA Schools? My proudest moment was being a Golden Apple Award winner in 2023. The recognition of this award was quite a humbling experience in my early childhood education career, especially since the nomination was from my community.

What brings you joy outside of work? Summertime! Being in a pool swimming laps, reading a good book or chatting with friends is where I am most relaxed. When not poolside, being with my family and friends experiencing life’s adventures!

Reflections from Burbank Early Childhood School Principal/Director Chris Thiel on Susan: Susan Laux has been part of the Burbank community for nearly four decades. It is difficult to think about the history of Burbank without thinking about Susan and the role she has played in it. Over the years, she has helped shape the experiences of so many students and families who have walked through our doors.

Susan often shares that Burbank has never felt like just a job. What has always mattered most to her are the relationships she has built along the way. Former students and families still stop by or reach out to say hello, and those moments speak to the kind of lasting impression she has made over the years.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to work with Susan knows the pride she takes in being part of this program and district. She brings years of experience, an intentional approach with young learners, and a steady presence that has meant a great deal to this community. Burbank has truly benefited from her dedication for many years, and we are grateful she continues to share that with our students and families.
