2018 Induction Class
Three former coaches and five former student-athletes were inducted into the Upper Arlington High School Athletic Hall of Fame on January 5, 2018. The second class of inductees are:
Jack Graf (Class of 1937), holding the basketball in the photo, was captain of the OHSAA boys basketball state championship team. Graf went on to be a two-sport athlete at The Ohio State University and was named Big 10 Conference Football MVP in 1942.
Dale Hartney was a head coach for more than 40 years in cross country, track and field, and girls basketball. Hartney won two state championships in cross country (1986 and 1987). He also taught at Upper Arlington High School for more than 20 years.
Rex Holman (Class of 1988) was a wrestler and football player during his time at the high school. Holman continues to hold the record as the only two-time OHSAA wrestling state champion (1987 and 1988) from Upper Arlington High School and, with a career record of 113-5, has the highest win percentage in school history. He placed in the OHSAA state championship three times and went on to win the NCAA Division I national championship at The Ohio State University in 1993 with a 29-0 record.
Lynda McCandlish Phlipot
Lynda McCandlish Phlipot (Class of 2002) was named 1st Team All Ohio and 1st Team All American in girls lacrosse for two consecutive years (2001 and 2002). She won the state championship as a player in 2002 and as a coach in 2008. While at Northwestern University, she was a two-time NCAA Division I national champion.
Radonna Miller, top row, center in the photo above, was head coach for girls and boys volleyball, softball, girls tennis and girls basketball from 1969 to 1994. Miller was the first coach at the high school in both boys and girls volleyball and softball, and was instrumental in developing women’s sports at UAHS and the sport of girls volleyball in central Ohio.
L. Marvin Moorehead
L. Marvin Moorehead was head football coach from 1955 to 1969. Moorehead had an overall record of 111-25-3 as football coach at Upper Arlington High School. He coached six undefeated teams and three state championship teams.
Peggy Odita (Class of 1986) competed in track and field and played girls basketball at the high school. Odita was named All Ohio in track and field and was a three-time state champion in the high jump (1984, 1985 and 1986) as well as a state champion in the long jump (1986).
Rick Slager (Class of 1972) played football and boys tennis at the high school. Slager was named OHSAA 1st Team All Ohio in football and was state champion and All American in boys tennis. He went on to be the starting quarterback at Notre Dame University and was featured on the cover of "Sports Illustrated" magazine.
