Family Update - May 29, 2022

May 29, 2022

Dear Families,

It has been a great year!  Thank you for all of your support - we couldn’t  have done it without you nor would we want to.  Thank you always for sharing your students with us!  We love them!

Please be sure to have your ID with you if you are volunteering for PAW day.  Volunteers can check into the office upon arrival.  Thank you for helping!

On Wednesday, June 1, we expect a large turn out for the 8th grade celebration as well as 6W parents coming in to view final projects.  Please be prepared with your ID.  Due to anticipated numbers on this day, we will not ask parents to check into the office.  Instead, we will have tables set up inside the front doors and inside the Coventry Rd. doors.  You will be asked to show your ID, sign in,  and will be provided a visitor sticker.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  These are standard safety procedures that we feel are important even on the last day of school.  Thank you!

Parents/guardians are welcome to attend the 8th grade celebration.  If you are unable to attend, or if there are extended family members who would like to participate, please use this link to access the livestream.

Finally, if you give your student permission to leave early on either day next week, please sign them out as you typically do.  We still keep track of them and need to be sure they are safe and sound here or with you.  We are not able to allow parents to sign out other students. Only your child. Thank you for your help with this!

Warm Regards,

Aimee C. White

Heather Markward

JONES SUMMER READING REQUIREMENTS Students at each grade level should expect to engage in classroom activities based on their summer reading choices during the first week of the 2022-23 school year. These activities, including written and spoken responses, will require students to be knowledgeable about their summer reading text. We strongly encourage students to purchase their own copy of their text so that they may highlight, flag and annotate key passages that may be of help to them in their language arts classrooms.

6th Grade

The Young Man and the Sea, by Rodman Philbrick

7th Grade

Students will select a biography or autobiography of a figure of interest to them. Their selection should be age and grade-level appropriate, and should fall within the Lexile range that is suited to their individual ability. Your student’s most recent STAR assessment provides their estimated Lexile range.

8th Grade

Students may read either a fiction or non-fiction book of their own choosing, based on their interests. Their selection should be age and grade-level appropriate, and should fall within the Lexile range that is suited to their individual ability. Your student’s most recent STAR assessment provides their estimated Lexile range.

For rising 7th and 8th grade students, please refer to our recommended book list, attached, for possible titles.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE -  Attention students with emergency meds, daily meds, or as needed meds stored in the health clinic - Medications can be picked up any time up until the end of the year. Once school is out the medication will be stored in locked drawers in the clinic until fall. 8th grade medications that are not picked up will be transferred to the high school. If you are transferring out of the district, please pick up any medication.

If your child is going on the orchestra trip after school is out, you may want their

emergency medication with them for the trip, so come and pick it up. Schedule your healthcare provider appointment to complete next year’s medication authorization forms. New forms need to be ready by the first day of school unless the current ones have been signed less than 12 months ago. Thanks for your cooperation and have a great summer!

FALL PRODUCTION 2022: NEWSIES, JR. - Students interested in Cast or Tech Crew should join our Fall Pro 2022 Canvas page to access Audition and Application Materials over the summer.  There you can also find the slides from the information meeting, show specific details, and upcoming dates.  Students will need to sign up for the Canvas page and observing adults will be automatically linked in with your student.  Performances will be October 21, 22, 23.  Contact Chris Lape ([email protected]) with Cast Questions, Anthony Stype ([email protected]) with Tech Crew Questions, and [email protected] with Parent questions.

SERVICE HOURS - Students can start over the summer - Community service hours support the mission of the Upper Arlington School District by engaging students in meaningful volunteer opportunities which enrich the learning experience while teaching civic responsibility and strengthening communities. Our vision is to develop uniquely accomplished students prepared to serve, lead, and succeed.  Community service helps students take skills they have learned in the classroom outside their classroom walls.

Being involved in their communities and serving others provides students a sense of purpose and helps students make informed decisions about possible career exploration pathways.  Community service challenges students to engage in meaningful authentic learning experiences which will further help prepare them to serve, lead, and succeed.

Each year we ask that all Jones students complete 5 hours of community service.  Students may begin working on hours for the 2022-2023 school year now.  We will show students how to enter their hours in the fall. All hours need to be entered into the x2vol program by May 1, 2023. Students can access their x2vol accounts through www.naviance.com or the ClassLink app on their iPad.

SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS - School supply lists will be shared with the summer update at the beginning of August.  Supplies needed are dependent on what house teachers have requested.  (Students will need to know their house before they know what supplies are needed.)  Students will be given the opportunity to walk their schedule prior to the first week of school.

THE STAND PROJECT - The Stand Project is seeking new members for the 2022-23 school year! Help organize fun, substance-free events to engage UA's youth of all ages; and educate and inspire the community as a whole to lead a healthy and supportive lifestyle.

Join us on Saturday, June 11th 9am-12pm for our 2022-23 vision session. Complete this survey to RSVP and/or to let us know your interest in participating during the 2022-23 school year.

PAW DAY - The end of the 2021/22 school year is near! We are proud of our JMS students and their achievements, especially their kindness and positively.  Our PAW (Positive Attitude Wins) Day will celebrate these accomplishments on Tuesday, May 31st with day-long collaborative games and activities for students with their advisories. PAW day is a great day for students to work with their fellow advisory members and have fun while learning to compete in a positive and collaborative manner.

Advisories will eat lunch together outside during PAW day.  We encourage all students to pack a lunch on this day and we will also have cafeteria options available for those that prefer to order pizza from the cafeteria.

We look forward to a fantastic PAW day with our students.

Final Reminders for Students on PAW Day:

  • Should have no backpacks/iPads when they come to school. They won't need them.
  • Should pack their lunch. If students must purchase food, pizza is available in the cafeteria. Remember everyone will be eating at the same time.
  • Students will leave their lunches in their advisory rooms while activities are taking place.
  • Should bring with them a Positive Attitude and be prepared to have fun!!

8th GRADE CELEBRATION - We will celebrate our graduating 8th graders on Wednesday, June 1st. Due to elementary celebrations, we wanted to make it possible for families to attend both the middle and elementary level events so we have adjusted our schedule.
