September Construction Update: New learning spaces starting to take shape

Contractors continued to make great progress during August and into September on the five projects underway in the first phase of the facilities master plan for Upper Arlington Schools.

In late August, the Board of Education marked a major milestone for the projects by finalizing the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for all six projects in the first phase of the facilities master plan - a new Upper Arlington High School and the five new or renovated elementary schools. All projects are on schedule and on budget.

Here is an update on the first five projects. Construction of a new Windermere Elementary School will follow beginning in the summer of 2020.

New Upper Arlington High School project and stadium renovation
The high school project continues to progress with the installation of foundations and stair towers throughout the footprint of the new building. The first delivery of structural steel arrived on September 9, and ironworkers have begun setting structural steel for the new building.

On the high school site, the newly renovated Marv Moorehead Memorial Stadium opened on schedule on August 16 for the fall athletics season. A rededication ceremony for the renovated stadium preceded the first football home game of the season, on September 6. Dozens of student-athletes as well as representatives from the Bear Den spirit club and the Golden Bear Marching Band joined the Board of Education, special guests Brett Moorehead, son of the late athletic director, and legendary coach Ted Wolford, and Ohio Rep. Allison Russo and Ohio Sen. Stephanie Kunze on the field for the ribbon-cutting.

Crews will continue to put the finishing touches on the stadium this fall.

Barrington Elementary School renovation and addition
Work is continuing to progress on the installation of sanitary and storm sewer piping. Footing and foundation work will continue for this project, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors continue their work in advance of the construction of the new addition.

New Greensview Elementary School project
The mason contractor continues to make great progress building CMU walls. The first delivery of structural steel and bar-joist arrived on site on September 3, and installation has begun. Bar-joist has already been completed in the gymnasium area.

Tremont Elementary School renovation and addition
The building pad for the new addition to Tremont is completed, and construction of the exterior walls is underway. Inside the building, the second floor renovation project is continuing to progress. Contractors have begun working second shift on the second floor renovation project to avoid construction noise disrupting the school day.

New Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School project
The construction of the CMU bearing walls continues in preparation for the delivery and installation of structural steel and bar-joist beginning in late September with the new gymnasium. Work continues on under-slab electric and plumbing rough-in and the installation of an underground detention system.
