Family Update - May 14, 2023

Dear Families,

On behalf of our full staff at JMS, we’d like to thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity this week during Staff Appreciation Week. Many thanks to the PTO for all of the treats and love during the week (pics below).  You spoiled us so well!

Due to the 8th grade class party and the trip to Washington, DC this week, the 7th graders will eat between 11:28 and 12:11 every day except for Thursday.  On Thursday, 7th grade will eat at their normal time (12:15 to 12:58) so that we can welcome 5th graders from Barrington for their transition lunch during 5th period.

Our 6th grade class party is this Thursday from 1:30 to 3:15 – looking forward to it!

As a friendly reminder, if you plan to volunteer at or to attend end of the year events, please be sure to bring a photo ID with you and scan in at the front office.  Even though it’s the end of the year, we still take student and staff safety very seriously.  Thank you for your help with this!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our JMS moms!

Warm regards,

Aimee C. White

Heather Markward

JONES WEEKEND UPDATE - Click here to watch this week's episode of Jones Weekend Update.

LUNCH INFORMATION FOR LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - On the last day of school, students will be released at 11:35am.  Due to this, there will not be a normal lunch service on that day.  We are excited to offer a pre-order lunch option your student could pick up before they are released on the last day. If you would like to have a pick-up lunch for your student, please complete the form below by Friday, May 19th.  This will assist us in ensuring we have your student's lunch ready for pick-up prior to being released on the last day, Thursday May 25th. Boxed Lunch Option will include choice of entree and bottled water.  All meals will include fruit and veggie sides.  Cost: $3.25

To order, please click on the following link:   Jones Last Day Pre-Order Pick Up Lunch Link

REMINDER FOR 7TH GRADERS FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE DAY -

  • Wear long pants and closed toe shoes with good tread
  • Pack a lunch that is nut free
  • Bring a reusable water bottle that can be refilled as needed throughout the day
  • Be ready for the weather:  sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, layers, rain gear if needed, etc.

ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS GOING TO DC NEXT WEEK - Be sure to arrive no later than 6:30am on Tuesday morning to load up for the DC trip.  Meet on the Coventry Road side of the building and look for your bus (they will be lined up in numerical order).  Your chaperones will tell you where to put your luggage and how to line up when you have the final meeting on Monday, 5/15. Rest up this weekend, pack, and get ready for a great trip!

SUMMER READING REQUIREMENTS FOR RISING FRESHMEN - UAHS will have required summer reading for rising freshmen - the high school has not shared that information with us yet - we will keep you updated when we receive that information.

SUMMER READING REQUIREMENTS FOR JONES MIDDLE SCHOOL - Students at each grade level should expect to engage in classroom activities based on their summer reading choices during the first week of the 2023-24 school year. These activities, including written and spoken responses, will require students to be knowledgeable about their summer reading text. We strongly encourage students to purchase their own copy of the text so that they may highlight, flag and annotate key passages that may be of help to them in their language arts classrooms.

  • 6th Grade - The Breadwinner, by Deborah Ellis
  • 7th Grade - The Schwa Was Here, Neal Shusterman
  • 8th Grade - Students may read either a fiction or non-fiction book of their own choosing, based on their interests. Their selection should be age and grade-level appropriate, and should fall within the Lexile range that is suited to their individual ability.  Your student’s most recent STAR assessment provides their estimated Lexile range.

ONLINE ACADEMY 2023-24 - For the 2023-2024 school year, UA Schools will be offering an online learning opportunity for grades 6 through 12 through the  UA Online Academy.  Families will have the opportunity to enroll in or transfer out of the Online Academy for the upcoming school year.

  • To enroll in the Online Academy: Please complete this form if your student is ready to commit to participation in the Online Academy for the 2023-2024 school year. Please note that this will be a semester-long commitment, with the option of transferring at the semester in January.
  • To transfer out of the Online Academy: Please complete this form if you have a current Online Academy student who will be returning to their school building for the 2023-2024 school year.

The deadline is Monday, May 15 at 8pm. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

7-PART VAPING VIDEO SERIES

Vaping is a significant concern among young people across the country, including Upper Arlington, and rates of use continue to climb. In collaboration with valued community partners in UA Schools, UAPD, and local medical and behavioral health experts, The Stand Project has updated and re-released this 7-part series of short videos to educate the community about the facts and risks of youth e-cigarette use - including Aimee White's segment on the effects of nicotine on "Teen Brain Development."

Thank you PTO!!!
