As the leaders of your children’s schools and our district, we want to express our steadfast commitment to eliminating racism and promoting justice and equity. It is critically important that we continue this work in our schools as our nation engages in crucial discussions about racism and the systemic injustice that has created fear, pain and inequity for Black Americans for many generations. We want to express to you that we are committed to moving forward with the vital diversity, equity and inclusion work that began in our schools several years ago.
We strive to ensure that all of our students feel a strong sense of belonging in our schools and are welcomed, respected, supported and celebrated. But we know there are times our schools have fallen short of that ideal.
There is a tremendous amount of work to be done to eliminate racism in our schools and support diversity, equity and inclusion. The Board of Education and district leaders look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks about our work going forward as we continue to implement this crucial piece of our strategic plan.
Below is a list of resources to consider when talking about race with children. We recommend that families take the time to read any resource before introducing it to their children. If your child asks a question for which you do not have an answer, let your child know that it’s a good question and that you will learn more and then share that information with them.
