Construction Update: New UAHS, elementary schools on schedule to open in August

As the end of the school year approaches, Upper Arlington Schools is looking ahead to many big milestones for the three remaining projects in the facilities master plan. The new high school, the new Windermere and the renovation project at Barrington are on schedule and on budget to open to students and staff in August. We are looking forward to welcoming our community into all of our new and renovated buildings in August - including the projects we’ve already completed: the new Greensview, the new Wickliffe, the new Tremont and the Barrington addition.

New Windermere Elementary School

You may recall that back in June of 2020, the old Windermere was demolished to build a brand new building on the same site. A lot has changed since then! The brick veneer is mostly completed, and inside the media center, gymnasium and learning commons and spaces are taking shape. We are excited to welcome the Hawks into their new home on Windermere Road in August.

Barrington Elementary School renovation project

At Barrington, the renovation project is moving along very well. It’s an incredible transformation for the original areas of the building along Andover Road. The classrooms, learning commons and new main entry are getting closer to being finished - and we’re very excited to get occupancy of this space early in the summer. You’ll see work continuing this summer at Barrington to remove the “pods” on the southeast end of the building and develop the site, including play space for students.

New Upper Arlington High School

Finally, we are very excited to welcome students in August into the new Upper Arlington High School - and our students are really excited, too! In the academic area, crews are hanging drywall, painting, installing flooring and ceiling tiles, and even doing the final stages of cleaning in completed areas. In the performing arts center, drywall is being finished and scaffolding is coming down - revealing an impressive space for our students to shine. In our athletic spaces, the floor of the competition varsity gym is done and bleachers will be going in. In the natatorium, accent tile and ductwork will be installed soon. You’ll see the exterior glass work quickly going in on the natatorium and entrances to the building.

While we’re excited about the new high school, we are sad to see the old building go. It holds  so many memories, for so many students, alumni, families, and community members. May 27th will be the last day for students in this building, and we’ll quickly be turning over the building to start the demolition process. That work will be done with great care, especially in the area built on the site of the Litchford family cemetery.

Before we say goodbye to the Ridgeview Road building, we’ll be sharing a virtual walk-through on our website and social media accounts. We’d also like to thank the Upper Arlington Alumni Association for hosting a final walk-through for alumni and community members earlier this month.
