Upper Arlington Schools family update - Friday, October 23, 2020

Dear Upper Arlington families,

I hope it has been a good week for all of our families in both the school-based pathway and the Online Academy.

You can click here to watch my video update on health data and our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and check out the email below for other important updates.

Medical Advisory Team

We continue to work closely with our Medical Advisory Team to watch both our local UA health data as well as what’s happening in the county and around the state.  I’m pleased to say that early next week we will have a draft matrix to share with everyone.

If the Board of Education approves this matrix, it will be used to guide when we would transition into an all-in learning model for our students on the school-based pathway.  The Medical Advisory Team will continue to work with us to develop other matrices that would guide other potential transitions - such as back to hybrid or even to enhanced distance learning.

Executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion

I’m really excited to announce that during the November Board of Education meeting, I will recommend Matthew Boaz for the position of executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Mr. Boaz has extensive experience in the DEI field over the past 20 years in a variety of public agencies and educational institutions. He currently serves as the director of diversity and inclusion for the city of Toledo. Prior to that, he was the chief diversity officer at Wright State University.  He has also worked with the University of Cincinnati and Miami University during his career.

Mr. Boaz earned a bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies/interpersonal and public communication from Bowling Green State University.  He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from BGSU.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns.

I’d like to thank the members of our new Equity Advisory Board and all of the students, staff and community members who took time to be a part of the interview process for this position. Mr. Boaz is excited to join us here in UA and is passionate about improving the school experience for our students, staff and families.

COVID-19 data dashboard

You can find all of this week’s updated health data on our COVID-19 data dashboard.

Reminder - student illness protocols

My thanks again to all of you for helping us follow all of the health precautions.  We understand that a simple runny nose can mean more work for families than in a typical year, and we greatly appreciate your understanding and support.  See the links below for more information.

Also please remember that if you or someone in your home is awaiting a COVID-19 test or test results, we ask that students stay home until those results are received.

For further questions, you can also reach out to COVID Nurse Coordinator Gina Rancitelli at [email protected].

That’s all for my update this week. I hope you have a great weekend, cheer on the Buckeyes, and as always go Bears!

Sincerely,

Paul Imhoff, Ed.D.

Superintendent, Upper Arlington Schools
