District Parent Night at UAHS: Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Children

From underachievement, overexcitabilities, and perfectionism to imposter syndrome, gifted children navigate through a slew of social and emotional challenges throughout their development.  Please join us for a presentation and discussion as we explore these issues and go over some possible ways parents can assist their children to navigate successfully through these challenges on January 24th at 7:00pm at Upper Arlington High School.

Wireless Usage/Apple Watches/iPhones/Gizmos:

As smartwatches become more common among students, parents have asked about settings that might reduce the risk of the device causing a distraction during school. Here are links to information about school-time settings for two devices we see here at school, the Apple watch and the Gizmo watch.  We kindly ask that students use these settings.  Please know we will always call you or allow your child to call you during the day, if needed. If the device is causing a distraction to the student or others or being used inappropriately, the student will be asked to place the device in their backpack until it is time to go home.

Related Arts News Featuring Art Class with Mrs. Poling

First graders have been sculpting PINCH POTS.

Using our hands, artists manipulate clay into a ball, then use their thumb and fingers to pinch around edges. Students use creative problem solving to find lumps or thick areas of clay. Then they pinch on those areas to even out the thickness of the walls.

Our inspiration includes looking at historical clay artifacts. Ohio’s history with clay is still being studied and new discoveries are happening.  If you are interested in archaeology, I recommend a visit to Ohio History Connection to learn more! https://www.ohiohistory.org/

Mrs. Poling’s Playdough Recipe ?

The sculpting fun doesn’t have to end in art class. You can make playdough at home. It's the perfect activity for indoor days. This recipe is soft, doesn’t stick, and lasts for months in a zip-top bag.

Ingredients:

2 cups flour

3/4 cup salt

4 teaspoons cream of tartar (look in the spice area at the grocery)

2 cups lukewarm water

2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)

Quart sized zipper bags

Process

1. Stir together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a large bowl.

2. Add the water and oil and stir. It should be wet, sticky and thick.

3. Transfer the mixture to a medium sized saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball.

4. Transfer the play-dough from the pot onto wax paper and allow to cool slightly. Knead until smooth. Once it’s all mixed together you’re ready to PLAY.

Storage

Keep the play-dough inside zip-top bags to keep soft. Keeps for up to 3 months.

Fun tip: You can add a drop of food coloring to create different colors.
