Family Update - April 23, 2023

Dear Families,

 

We will finish state testing this week with math for all students on Monday and Tuesday and science for 8th graders only on Thursday.  Please remind your student to charge their iPad the night before – many thanks!

 

We are looking forward to our spring band concert this Thursday!  We are always amazed at the growth our musicians make during the year.

 

We are excited to take on the Hastings staff Friday evening for our Spike Out Hunger event (see details below).  Go Jones Bears!!!

REMINDER TO PARENTS -  Students are permitted to have water bottles in class - no other liquids.

 

FOOD DRIVE & SPIKE OUT HUNGER EVENT - The Jones v. Hastings canned food drive started this past Wednesday and runs through this coming Wednesday, April 26th.  Students can bring in canned goods to their history classes to help us BEAT HASTINGS!!  TICKETS also went on sale Thursday during lunch periods. They are $4 or $3 + 1 canned food item. The volleyball game is Friday, April 28th at UAHS from 7-8pm. Doors open at 6:45pm. Tickets at the door are $5 each. Here are some majorly needed items at the Mid-Ohio Foodbank: 

 

Canned tuna, peanut butter, protein bars, canned beans, pet supplies (food, treats, pet care products), canned fruit, grains (cereal, pasta, rice, mac & cheese), baby food/formula, and canned vegetables.

ADOPT A TEACHER/STAFF MEMBER - STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK - We want to show the teachers and staff at Jones how much we appreciate all of their hard work and support! 

We invite you to sign up and adopt a teacher or staff member for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, which is May 8th - May 12th. Your family may adopt one (or several) teacher/staff member or you can team up with another family to adopt one (or several). During the week, let your person know that you are thinking about them! IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES FROM ONLINE ACADEMY - Online Academy will be hosting Zoom information sessions for families who may be interested in attending Upper Arlington Online Academy for the 2023-2024 school year. High School, Middle, and upcoming 6th grade families are invited to attend this informational session to learn more about our Online Academy program and to see if this is a beneficial option for their students! If you are interested in attending either one of these sessions, please complete this form to request a session and a member of our team will follow up with you to provide the Zoom link. 8TH GRADE CELEBRATION - The 8th grade celebration will be held on the morning of May 25 beginning at 8:25 am in the auditorium.  We expect the celebration to end at approximately 9:20 am.  Parents are invited to participate in an 8th grade clap out and to enjoy refreshments in the cafeteria immediately following the celebration.  Because this is intended to celebrate the whole class, individual awards and certificates will be sent directly to families or presented at other spring events such as upcoming concerts or the athletic recognition night.

 

SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR UPDATES - The 2022-2023 school year calendar has been updated to reflect the early dismissal times for the last day of school — Thursday, May 25. Elementary dismissal will be at 11:05 a.m., and middle school dismissal will be at 11:35 a.m. High school will follow the exam schedule. You can view the updated school year calendar here.

 

Preorder grab and go lunches from the Nutritional Services Department will be available on May 25. More details to follow.

 

7TH GRADE ADVENTURE CAMP INFO - We are excited about our upcoming 7th grade Outdoor Adventure! We have attached two documents to this newsletter. One of the attachments has information about the day, what students will be doing, how they should prepare, and the date when your student's advisory will attend. The other attachment contains all of the required forms that must be signed and returned to your student's science teacher by April 28th. *Please note if your student will not be attending, you must still sign and return the first page (School Sponsored Trip Permission).

 

The fee ($150) for the trip can be paid in EZPay as of today. Payment is due by April 28th. If you would like financial assistance please email Laurie Sutherin ([email protected]). We want all students to be able to attend.  Please contact Laurie or Karl Kirkpatrick ([email protected]).

 

The cost for the 7th grade camp breaks down as follows:  $65 for High Rock Adventures, $40 for NevilleBillie Adventure Park and $45 to cover substitutes, transportation, etc.

LISTEN, LEARN & LEAD DATES ANNOUNCED - This May, the Board of Education will continue its Listen Learn Lead community engagement process in an effort to help our schools and our community be the best they can be. The goal is to bring people together to hear different viewpoints and have positive and productive conversations between as many students, families, community members and staff members as possible.  These discussions will also offer an opportunity to get to know incoming superintendent Dr. Robert Hunt and help him learn about our amazing community.  We hope you can join us at one of the following sessions:

SUMMER ACADEMY- Upper Arlington Schools is proud to offer an exceptional summer school program for our students for the summer of 2023. Summer Academy 2023 will offer comprehensive academic and well-being programming. Course descriptions and schedules for Summer Academy 2023 are available on the Summer Academy website and registration will open at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 21. All courses will be offered free of charge for 2023 thanks to federal funding.

 

8TH GRADE YEARBOOK TRIBUTES - Every year 8th grade parents have the opportunity to purchase a tribute for their child in the Jones Middle School Yearbook. This is usually wishing them well as they prepare to transition to UAHS in the Fall. The cost is $20 and all orders are ONLINE this year! We ask that you limit your order to one tribute per 8th grade child. The deadline to order is April 28, 2023 but don't wait because we do have a set number of tributes we can accept due to yearbook page restrictions.

JMS PTO

 

The staff of both Jones and Hastings will be having a school Vs. school volleyball event on April 28th held at the Upper Arlington High School gym. All proceeds raised through ticket sales, raffle and concessions from this event will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Please consider donating items for the concession stand by signing up on the link below. All items can be dropped off to the JMS office any time between now and April 27th.

THE STAND PROJECT

 

TheStand Project is an Upper Arlington community action project focused on the prevention of substance misuse and committed to standing by students and families in finding help. 

 

7-PART VAPING VIDEO SERIES

Vaping is a significant concern among young people across the country, including Upper Arlington, and rates of use continue to climb. In collaboration with valued community partners in UA Schools, UAPD, and local medical and behavioral health experts, The Stand Project has updated and re-released this 7-part series of short videos to educate the community about the facts and risks of youth e-cigarette use - including Aimee White's segment on the effects of nicotine on "Teen Brain Development."
