LABS Potluck Invitation

Students gathered around food they brought in for their potluck

November 16, 2022

Dear Guest,
My name is              , I am a junior at Upper Arlington High School and a member of our schools LABS class. Starting this year, a group of juniors signed up for LABS (Language, Anthropology, Belonging, Service) .  LABS is a combination of IB Literature and IB Social and Cultural Anthropology. We started the second quarter with a book called Standing in the Need.  The book follows a family that experienced the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina. It explains how a sense of belonging and bonds within families can look different to outsiders.  One takeaway we had from the book was the way food connected family members together.  As we discussed it more, our class came to the conclusion that each of us has a connection to food through our own family traditions.

We want to invite you to our version of a family potluck, celebrating the cultural backgrounds of our families.  We want to create a tradition of belonging and equality.

To do so, we are inviting our friends and classmates in INC (Individualized Needs Center) to participate in our potluck, as we look to build an inclusive community at our school.

Each student is bringing in a dish that represents their sense of belonging in their family.  Please join us this Wednesday, November 16th at 12:45 in the Lab Kitchen.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Martin and Mrs. Carmichael.

Thank you,

LABS class
