Upper Arlington Schools is just one of 56 districts to be awarded a new grant from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, funds that will support the launch of innovative new educational pathways for students.
“We are thrilled that Upper Arlington students are among the first to have access to these incredible new programs,” said Upper Arlington Board of Education President Jenny McKenna. “These funds from the state will help us enhance their learning experiences.”
The first of the two new pathways is the UC Early IT Microschool, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with University of Cincinnati and the PAST Foundation. This program will allow students to participate in a revolutionary educational experience that blurs the line between high school, college and the workforce while gaining industry credentials for high-value careers in informational technology.
The second new program is the Semiconductor Pathway in partnership with Columbus State Community College, which enables students to earn professional credentials for in-demand careers at organizations like Intel while also earning high school and college credit.
The grant provides $496,154 to purchase equipment and provide teacher professional development for the programs. It will also cover the costs of physical updates to the facility at 1950 North Mallway Drive, the former district office, that will support these learning pathways and other programs.
The North Mallway facility will also support the College Jumpstart program, which is new to UA Schools for the 2024-2025 school year and will allow high school students to earn up to 24 college credits over two years while staying within the school district.
“This grant is a critical piece in greatly expanding opportunities for our students next year,” said Superintendent Robert Hunt, Ph.D. “In my first few months as superintendent here, I have heard about the need for additional learning pathways from students, staff members and families. I am grateful these funds are available to support our amazing teachers as they bring these new opportunities to students.”
