Semiconductor Program

Semiconductor Program

Upper Arlington’s Semiconductor program is in partnership with Columbus State Community College and Intel. This program focuses on providing students with college credit plus (CCP) courses in automation and process control, two key skills for electro-mechanical technicians and the manufacturing of semiconductors. Electro-mechanical technicians maintain industrial machines and help design new, safer, more efficient systems. These electro-mechanical technicians are trained in a variety of skill areas, making them attractive to companies that need their knowledge, skills, and expertise to maintain a vast array of high-tech mechanical, electro-mechanical, hydraulic, and automation systems used in production. Courses in the Semiconductor/Engineering program contribute towards the completion of a Semiconductor Fundamentals certificate program and/or Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology AAS degree at Columbus State Community College.

Semiconductor Program Courses and Descriptions

ENGT 1101 Industrial Foundations

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

In this course, students will be introduced to print reading and part visualization from drawings, including sketching multi-view drawings and three-dimensional models, location of key features and dimensioning specifications. Students introduced to beginning concepts in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Instruction in using precision measurement tools including, but not limited to scales, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, coordinate measurement machines. Students will incorporate use of computer interfaces in metrology and basic statistical process control and topics in lean manufacturing.

ENGT 1102 Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems Fabrication

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

This course introduces students to the manufacturing environment and processes for production of Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS). Students will learn how to operate in a cleanroom environment, and will be introduced to the history, properties, and uses of silicon wafers. Manufacturing process including wafer-level processes, surface and bulk micro-machining, thin-film deposition, dry and wet etching, photolithography, process integration and the equipment used for these processes will be covered.

ITST 1101 IT Fundamentals +

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

This is an introductory IT Course that covers all areas of IT foundations, creating a broader understanding of IT. Topics covered: IT Concepts and Terminology, Infrastructure and Networks, Applications and Software, Database Fundamentals and Security. This course aligns with the CompTIA ITF+ Certification.

Semiconductor Program Courses to be Offered in Future Years

The following courses will potentially be offered in future years pending student enrollment and approval from Columbus State Community College.

EET 1105 Basic D/C Electronic Systems

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

Every electrical or electronic device operates using either Direct Current (DC) or Alternating Current (AC) or both. This course is an introduction to DC and AC fundamentals, the systems that use them, and the basic sources of DC and AC electricity.

ENGT 2201 Vacuum Systems

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

In this course, students will be introduced to the operational mechanisms and process use of vacuum pumps used in the semiconductor industry. Students will explain the operational methodology and process use of equipment that require vacuum pumps used in the semiconductor industry. Students will demonstrate problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills while learning how to perform maintenance on a vacuum system.

EET 1125 Basic A/C Electronic Systems

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

Every electrical or electronic device operates using either Direct Current (DC) or Alternating Current (AC) or both. This course is an introduction to AC fundamentals, the systems that use them, and the basic sources of AC electricity.

ENGT 2260 Basic Mechanisms and Drives

1.0 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
(1 period per day for 1 semester)
Prerequisites: Meet CCP Eligibility Requirements

This course will cover basic machine mechanisms (gears, belts, sprockets, bearings, clutches, couplings, springs, etc). It will also examine the basic drives of such mechanisms (electric motors and hydraulic & pneumatic actuators).
