Wellness

Each student is required to take two Physical Education courses. Physical Education elective offerings build upon students’ exposures from Wellness and/or past Physical Education experiences. Students may choose from Fitness Training, Walking for Fitness,  or Sports for Life. Each course is designed to appeal to students’ strengths and interests, while at the same time exposing students to the concept of living a physically healthy lifestyle.


Fitness Training

0.25 credit - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
1 period per day for 1 semester

Check out our new course offering - Fitness Training! This offering is a High-Intensity program with workouts based on functional movements, reflecting the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, jumping, and more.  Our Fitness Training class will focus on the ten fitness domains:  Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. The first nine weeks of the course will focus on individual goals and learning proper techniques of every exercise and movement.  Our Fitness Training program is meant to be scaled and suitable for all grade levels and physical challenges.

Sports for Life

0.25 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
1 period per day for 1 semester
Prerequisites:  None

Sports for Life is a games class. The purpose of this course is to study and participate in various sports. Units include racquet sports, invasion sports, court sports, and lifetime sports. Students participating in Sports for Life will learn multiple strategies for each sport. They will analyze and apply these strategies so they can successfully participate in the unit. Additionally, students will study the history and analyze the rules for each sport game unit, along with the participation in it. 

Walking for Fitness

0.25 credit — Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
1 period per day for 1 semester
Prerequisites:  None

Walking for Fitness will help motivate students to strive for lifetime personal fitness with an emphasis on overall wellness. The knowledge and skills taught in this course include an understanding of cardiovascular fitness, nutrition and weight management, heart rate monitors, pedometers, proper walking equipment and techniques, along with motivational tools for lifetime walking programs. Students will not only improve their cardiovascular system, they will also learn to better understand their bodies through a number of written activities.

Health Education

0.5 credit — Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 
1 period per day for 1 semester

This course promotes individual wellness of students by examining the ability to access, evaluate, and use basic health information, services and products. 

Content areas include wellness, mental health, nutrition and eating disorders, body image, fitness principles, communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproduction, sexually transmitted infections, relationships, decision-making, stress management, CPR, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
